EM POCUS

EM POCUS is designed for medical professionals at all levels who are not specialists in imaging but may use ultrasound as a diagnostic tool at the bedside for life-saving clinical decision-making in unstable patients. EM POCUS Pathway consists of the EM POCUS course and the POCUS Accreditation program conducted by the EM POCUS Academy, the Ultrasound Chapter of Sri Lanka College of Emergency Physicians, in collaboration with international faculty of accredited Emergency Specialists.

This is the first-ever Emergency Sonography program in Sri Lanka in collaboration with POCUS Academy in the USA to develop clinician-performed ultrasound in Emergency care settings and to establish an accreditation pathway for Emergency Sonography — EM POCUS pathway.

1. EM POCUS Course

This is a 3-day course which is implemented in a digital platform with an online physics module, pre-course materials in video presentation, pre and post-course assessments and a discussion forum. During the course, there will be hands-on solid training with more than 20 hours of scan time under direct supervision, covering ten modules and supporting mini-lectures. 

At the skills course, we help clinicians meet the growing demand for focused point-of-care ultrasonography in Emergency care.

Course fee:

  • For Post Graduate trainees - 40,000/-
  • For medical officers -  45,000/-
  • For International candidates - 300 USD

Modules: 

  • Ultrasound physics and knobology
  • Trauma-EFAST.
  • Lung scan.
  • Emergency Echocardiography. 
  • Hepatic and Biliary. 
  • KUB.
  • Gynaecology and early pregnancy/ basic monitoring of the fetus.
  • AAA.
  • DVT /Lower Extremity venous ultrasound. 
  • Fluid management and Resuscitation.
  • Sonography in Emergency Procedures.

Eligibility criteria:

All medical officers/Post Graduate Trainees/ Consultants with experience and basic knowledge in Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Emergency/critical care settings are eligible for the EM POCUS course.

2. EM POCUS Accreditation Program

This pathway needs the completion of an e-portfolio of clinical case-based ultrasound with at least 40% direct supervision by POCUS-ARDMS Accredited local trainers with a maximum of 1-year duration and final assessment by both local and international examiners. 

Candidates will be guided to complete the POCUS Fundamental Certification and POCUS Emergency Medicine Certification by POCUS Academy-USA. In the end, candidates will get internationally recognised accreditation for Emergency Sonography.

  • For International candidates - 250 USD

Eligibility criteria:

Successful completion of the EM POCUS workshop is a prerequisite for enrolment in the POCUS Accreditation program.
